My favourite place in Tartu is the one and only Werner Cafe- Lounge.
http://www.werner.ee/

There you get the best caffe latte in Estonia. It's a cosy place where you can start or finish the day in a relaxed atmosphere. Due to the own confectionery you'll find city's arguably best cakes and pastries here. There is also a restaurant in the second floor with upscale cuisine.

We really like the pizza's at Controvento in Tallinn's Old Town (Vanalinn)

I highly recommend the Puglie pizza. It's tomato sauce with mozzarella, tuna and onion. YUM!

Here is the website including full menu.

Oh yeah, in winter grab the table by the fireplace on the first floor if you can.

Places I like to go to are:

Maiasmokk (sweet tooth) cafe for coffee, tea, cakes and buns. They also serve an English breakfast in the morning. It's sort of an old world cafe and it's just just across the street from the Russian Embassy not far from Town Hall Square.

Then there's Kompressor for pancakes just around the corner from the Kalev store in the Old Town. You can get them with a sweet filling as a dessert or with tuna, meats, cheeses as a lunch. WARNING: They are BIG.

Is that the best place for pizza in Tallinn? My girlfriend also mentioned American Pizza to me. Is Contovento expensive Alex?

Another place to go out for food is the Maailm in Tartu. You will find it in Rüütli street not far from raekoja plats. The food is good and tasty and more european than regional. It is also a comfortable place to take your daily dose coffee. Wink
At night maailm transforms itself into a club with dj's and live concerts but this is not regularly. But if so you shouldn't miss that! : )

The online menu shows the prices. I don't consider it particularly expensive.

Controvento pizza is really thin. From what I understand that is more of a true Italian style and I particularly like it. So for me it's the best pizza. And it's got a nice atmosphere, especially if you sit by the fire.

American Pizza, the one in Vanalinn, has ok pizza too. They offer the deep dish and thick crust varieties. But the place is, no pun intended, kind of cheesy.

A cool restaurant in Tallinn, located on Vene tn 4 in Vanalinn (Old Town) is Klafira. It's a Russian restaurant with live folk music and belly dancers. Nice atmosphere. Waitresses stand on chairs and pour your ice cold vodka shots from high in the air, not spilling a drop!

A little pricey, but a must at least once.

Maailm is good. If you're looking for a big meal, try the 60s Grill (on Narva mnt - over the bridge from Town Hall Square and left across the park). Püssirohukelder is good for lunch during the day, but far too noisy at night.

And then there's of course the inimitable Zavood...

Is there anywhere in Estonia to get good authentic Greek food?

Always a bag of frozen pelmeenid in my freezer Very Happy Very common in Estonian households, yummy and cheap. Just a meat filled pasta thing, not really all that exciting. Eaten with sour cream usually.

Try Eesti Maja (Estonia House) for "typical Estonian" food. It's outside the Old Town so prices are more reasonable.

Both would be fine choices with good food but they're in the main tourist area of Old Town and not cheap.

I like the von Krahl theatre bar, just across the street from "Kompressor" on Rataskaevu. In the old town but quite reasonable.

http://www.vonkrahl.ee

The cheap as chips quick food that isn't a big mac option is the ubiquitous Cafe Reval which i quite like too. They have outlets all over the city centre
