Heh, don't mistake my knowing bands with actually.. uh.. KNOWING them? I know nothing about them, I have listened to them though because slsk has a huge Eesti community, and almost every Estonian band there is! (Also I still haven't listened to all the stuff that I have, I take time for it so it goes slowly... I'm still in the phase of trying to remember which sound to attribute to which band, for many of them! lol)

I'm fortunate to have found it! lol. But when it comes to trivia... well I couldn't tell you the first thing about my favourite band, even, let alone all the other ones. All I have access to really in text form is last.fm, and usually the bands could have done with a lot longer descriptions than they've been given! That's the frustrating thing...there's so much information around for some of those bands, but I just can't read it!

So thank you for filling me in a bit there, it's real interesting! You're not musically challenged at all Cool

Ah, I see. Can't say I'm into chants and the such much... correct me if I'm totally off tangent here, but I have to envision a mixture between industrial sounds and gothic chants xD By the bands I've listed that I like.. do you think I'd like RAM? If so I'll look into it!

Hey, I just got Selle aasta parimad lastelaulud (this years best children's songs) CD for my daughter. You want some rocking good tunes, that's the one right there. Razz

With lyrics like Miks ei ole jäätis soe, oh miks? (why isn't ice cream warm, oh why?) you can't go wrong. Laughing

Here's a good CD by composer Olav Ehala:

Aw cute ^__^ does your daughter enjoy her new CD?

Hehe well I was looking for some band / artist with easy lyrics to help me stock up on my vocabulary, is that the CD you linked me up to?

What's Olav sound like? What instruments does the CD feature? I'll definately give him a check-out, hope I can find some stuff by him!

Thanks much for posting this... I've never heard of him before! He does look like this one actor I know though called Roland Dueringer... that's a good sign, cause he's an awesome actor. Cool

lol... well thanks for posting that, I was sorta confused as to what you meant with chants. The only band I know who sorta encorporates chants are E-Nomine. So do you listen to them a lot? Maybe I have to be Estonian to understand the meaning of this, cause I'm totally confused!

... dude that reminds me of Rhapsody.. in this really nasty way. xD Not my thing at all... I think it's pretty nerdy really... especially with the old men sitting at the side and all those blokes in suits mixed in with the metal guys on the stage... sorry.. I must be jaded from my metal phase. Laughing

I did watch some of the other videos too.

Here is the childrens CD you can buy: http://www.helitroop.ee/?m=prod&w=show&id=141569

It is quite nice to listen to, even for adults. Kurgede Lahkumine is a beautiful song about storks. And yes, my little girl likes it Very Happy

As for Olav Ehala, he is a songwriter/composer. The songs on that CD are his songs performed by different Estonian singers.

So you are all time trying to tie me to some band/music style? Laughing
I like some songs, because they have something to say. And for some bands the probability to hear something good from them is somewhat higher, and for some bands it is non-existing. But this isn't enough for me to sit on some concert and hear all crap too. And a good book is anyway better then any song Wink

About chants. Estonian genuine music has all its roots in chants. You had to chant to get corn to grow or to find a bear in forest, to get marriage happy and a baby born healthy, the axe to keep the edge or battle to be won. And of-course those chants were stronger when sung.
And because we all know that gods and spirits are especially pig-headed and not very bright lot, you hat to repeat all this them repeatedly and in all thinkable variations, to get the work properly done Smile (And that bard did have additional time to compose the next dozen of verses was handy too). This was the way our 'regilaul' was born Wink

It was some 200- 250 years ago German liedertafel forced genuine 'regilaul' in the background and pawed the way for modern music. Currently old regilaul has last resorts in Sout-East Estonia (Setumaa) and on some islands. And in fair amount of choirs, etnographic ansambles, etc.

But the faith in the power of (song) words creeped in the new music too. P.e. in an old TV-movie "Siin me oleme" one character is saying to another (not so good one):
"Ma panen sind laulu sisse ja sealt ei saa sa ka saja aasta pärast välja"
"I'm putting you into an song, and you aren't getting out from there even after 100 years"

And of course you have to understand the words of "Raua needmine" to enjoy it - otherwise it is mote. Btw, as I did say before, the song is written for mens choir, and it was excellent performed by RAM alone too - Metsatöll did give it an additional quality only. (And in the link with clip wasn't "Raua needmine" performed, but some another song from same concert)

haha no no I hope I didn't come across that way. Most people (including myself) listen to a bit of everything, didn't mean to genre-box you at all so yeah, sorry if I gave that impression. Smile

What you wrote is pretty interesting, it ties in with what I'm just reading in a book right now... you guys had a pagan culture pretty long after most of Europe had been converted to Christianity... I think that'd be enough to inspire a band! =)

lol @ the "I'm gonna put you in a song..." translation, thanks for that, that's funny. xD Yeah, I guess I wouldn't wanna have the misfortune of being mentioned unfavourably in a song that happens to still be popular way beyond my death! That would suck...lol.

When I listen to music I'm more interested in bands dealing with the more recent history.. like 1900's and later.

So, what other bands do you feel have something to say?
And yes, I totally AM trying to get you to give me a band list of your favourite bands! Cool Cause I'm interested in the stuff other people like to listen to a lot.. dunno. It's a change from the usual "nirvana and led zeppelin" answers that I usually get Smile Also feel very free to explain why you like em =)

Haha for me it's the opposite... a good song beats every book! Anything interesting you've been reading lately?

Thanks for the link to the CD! I'll try to find that later.
'm curious by now though, admittedly =)

You know.. I actually found some of Olav Ehala's stuff! (I never buy a CD without sampling it first!) I like some songs, though it generally isn't down my line.

It's crazy... I went through almost the whole Eesti music catalogue on helitroop and sampled the songs of almost every band / artist I thought could be worthwile... it's amazing how many awesome bands / singer-songwriters you have! You have a music industry to feed 3 countries! Makes me ashamed of my own country... 7 million people and maybe 10 good bands, if you look real, real hard. How do you do it?? Cool

I forgot about Hinkus who I like. Jazzy type stuff. One of the few Estonian CD's I like that is sung in English is this Hinkus one featuring Maarja. She normally doesn't sound that good in English but she pulls it off here. Jazz suits her more than the crap she used to sing when she was younger.

Here is a nice song she sings in Estonian with legend Ivo Linna.

Okay, you asked for it. Wink Some years ago I stumbled on something curious in net - an Estonian medieval music ansamble Rondellus. They performed 10 songs of Black Sabbath in medieval style and in Latin. I did a little searching, and here you have a couple of links:

www.rondellus.ee
http://www.sabbatum.com/

There are links for music samples on both sites.

Another one, this time something lyrical. "Põgenevad unenäod"
The 1st link allows you hear whole song, but I don't like the artist there. And of-course are lyrics there what counts - but I don't even try to translate them.

And then there is Mari Kalkun - I did stumble upon link to her homepage on some blog some time ago and find her guite good. I didn't find the homepage anymore now, but here is a link with some samples (the 1st song is performed in South-Estonian dialect):

Maarja's got a nice voice.
I like jazz influences a lot, though straight out jazz... a friend of mine's nuts for jazz though, I'll play it to him and ask him if he likes it! =D
Damn, I came across similar stuff when I was digging for eesti music... I'll remember the names next time and post them for you, incase you don't alredy know them!

Haha... the second one's not down my line. Ivo Linna lost his voice with age or something, because he sounds terrible! Heh I guess it's all built on the fact that he's a 'legend', but if you put that aside... I'm sure his voice has seen better days! Heh. Thanks for that though, I enjoyed watching it a lot... him and the female singer seemed to get along very well =D I love male / female duets. There's only a couple that are down my line musically, but no videos for those songs, unfortunately!!!
I just youtubed some songcontest stuff the other day, don't remember her though. I started watching from the turn of the millenium, so maybe that's why! Keep the videos coming, if you still feel like it, I do enjoy watching whatever!

Aww retarded... I just finished writing you a real long reply and then the board goes white and now I can re-post this Mad lol. If it shows up twice before I get the chance to delete one of them, you'll know why.

First off, let me say I really liked the stuff you posted this time, I had a phase a couple of years back I'd listen to medievil music a lot.

Thank you so much for bringing Mari Kalkun to my attention, I really like her stuff, very serene and relaxing. Sorta like a non annoying version of Kari Ruislatten. I'm a sucker for all kinds of folk stuff anyhow.

I liked Rondellus, too bad the sabbatum mp3 samples are down!

I used to listen to a lot of similar stuff .. don't know if you like Corvus Corax or In Extremo?

Here's a band you may enjoy. They sing in German and Latin.
"Die Irrlichter"
listen to this song on youtube and tell me if you like it. I love it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIi0T2uSgv8
their website:
http://www.die-irrlichter.de/

You might like Florian Hoffmann, he's not signed or anything, he's a hobby musician covering Minnelieder and composing some of his own, he''s a real talented guy, or at least I think so! I have no idea how I found out about him anymore, buy hey. xD
Download all of his songs on his website here.
http://www.weltdeslarp.de/musik_lieder2.html

He's real into this live medievil RP sorta thing. I had to laugh when I saw the pictures... sorta nerdy. Smile I think he plays the insane guy in that RP.. xD
http://www.weltdeslarp.de/autor.html

There's a couple of names I wish I'd remembered because I loved the songs of theirs I heard on the Miroque sampler I used to buy.... Austria and Germany are good places to be if you're into medievil type music... they have so-so-so many records on it!

So thanks for all that, keep whatever else coming! =)

Woah awesome.. thanks for that! I had to crack up when I read the part about how he was voted Estonia's sexiest musician or something. Razz
He is so trying to hard... he's so not hot. Mad

Estonia has some sexy musicians... but Tanel Padar is not among them for me. xD

Slightly off-topic... I've been looking for an updated site about estonian bands and music news in english...not just a quick description like most websites in english. I've been looking for popular music blogs in english but can't find any.
