|
Hey folks!
This is my first post on this message board =) I hope in time there'll be a lot more people signing up, I'm so happy I found this place, because I have a lot of questions!
First off.. I LOVE Estonia... it first came to my attention through awesome Estonian bands (all my favourite bands are Estonian) I think I must have at least 30GB only Estonian music! lol. I'm trying to learn it too, I got some books and audio courses and I got some books on Estonian history and culture.. I'm interested in every single aspect of it so I'm so happy to be here! =)
I want to find out when my favourite bands are touring but the information is only in Estonian! So any information is highly appreciated!! I'm trying to learn but it's still too hard for me to decipher advanced Estonian since I'm only a beginner! I would love to know when they are performing because I'm thinking of going to Estonia in summer (maybe combined with a language course while I'm there) and I'd LOVE to see my favourite artists perform!
Since I'm interested in politics and social sciences too (I'm studying Sociology) I'd also be interested in the political orientation of Estonian bands and the history that spawned the music! I ordered books on the subject, but they have yet to arrive (can't wait) xD
I'm from Austria (studying in the Uk right now) but I'll be happy to translate any german lyrics into english for you, if you want and tell you about Austria, if you're interested. =) (Sort of like culture exchange xD)
=)

Awesome, thanks for your quick reply! =))
Yeah, I noticed this board is still young, well, I'll be sticking around and hopefully as time goes by and I learn more about Estonia and the language I can be a more productive member. I hope it will grow too! =) Great idea with the message board.. I've been looking all over for people to ask, but up until now my options were very limited.
lol! I was so exited about my first post that I forgot to list some of the bands.
OK here goes. (I know some of these bands have broke up, but maybe the members are in new bands that I don't know of, in which case I'd love to go see them, instead! lol. I'll give a short rundown.)
*gets out iPod to check* (I have an english keyboard so I can't make umlauts and the such but I hope you will know which bands I mean anyhow! lol)
My alltime favourite Estonian bands:
Metro Luminal
Vennaskond
Sopruse Puiestee
Alumiinium
(And everything that Allan Vainola was ever involved in... I'd LOVE to go see him solo too so if you know...)
ID Rev
The Belka
Eppu Normaali
Orelipoiss
Pooloy Glaanz << =)
Bands I really like to the extent of wanting to see in a concert:
HND
Terminaator
Smilers
Roovel Oobik
Varuvaljapaas
Indigolapsed
Propeller
Rullnokad
Pastacas
PS Troika
Ultramelanhool
Must Q
2 Quick Start
Agent M
Super Boys
Ainus Seadus
Tajo Jadajas
Tanel Padar & the Sun
Kook
Nightlight Duo
Oleg Solg
Kosmikud
Sulo
Kulo
Beep Shop Boys
Endri
Karl Madis
Kognito
Sinu Naine
Kohalik ja Kohatu
Erich Krieger
Islaja
Jaaboiler
Generaator M
Genialistid
I know that's a lot but maybe if you happen to remember one or two names, and you see a poster up somewhere, you will remember to tell me about it! Also I'd be curious to find out all of your favourite bands! I always welcome recommendations!
I will not list the other bands I think it may get a bit boring to go see them, even though listening to them may be nice so I will not bother writing them all down.
Oh I love a lot of Finnish music too (got tons of favourite Finnish bands tooxD) So if any of you know an english language website of their tourdates in Estonia, that would be much appreciated!
Also every information you can give me about my favourite bands is appreciated! (Stuff that hasn't already been translated, because if it has, I've probably read it already! lol)
I have more to write, but I'll let it be for now before this post becomes a novel O.o
I will use this thread for discussions about these bands if that's OK? =)
So thank you again and anything you know about band members or if you have seen them live (!!) or if you have any rare pictures or scans... post it here, I'd be so happy! I'm already real greatful that I found a place in which I can post this in the first place! xD So thanks so much for that!

Oops, I accidentally deleted my welcome post to you. Time for bed!
If you'd like, post a brief introduction of yourself in the New Members Area also, for those that maybe don't visit the music section
Then everyone can say HI! _________________ Estonia Forum: www.estoniaforum.org

Hey there again! Wow, thanks for all of that! I knew most of their official websites already, but it never occured to me to check SP's forum for their tourdates... I clicked on the forum once and was overwhelmed by the vastness of it all and I figured I wouldn't linger and piss myself off by skimming over all that awesome information I can't understand, so I clickedd away again, but when you gave me the link I went on it again and actually found their tourdates so yay for that! Thanks so much, I hope they'll still be touring in summer, I'd kill myself if they weren't!
I really want those SP shirts for gals... if I ever get to see em live I'll have to stock up on band memorabilia, in the mean time I'll sit here and wonder if they ship that shirt to adresses outside of Estonia. I wish they had an online store with automated checkout... it'd be a lot easier!
Aww thanks much, no need to find their official websites for me... I think I know most of them already! Though thanks much for the Vennaskond link, I didn't know that website! Hmm, I missed them in February. Also I want that DVD!! >3 Where do they sell it? I wonder if I could pick it up in a store in Tallinn, I can't seem to find it anywhere on the net. Argh! Why can't I just be into music from the UK... it's so nice and readily available everywhere. xD I hope they'll be playing again soon, or put advance tourdates up! Some websites only put dates of concerts up that have already been! Sorta like "here's what you've missed, thanks for stopping by"! =333
When I go to Tallinn I think I'll just have to camp outside the Rock Cafe and randomely buy tickets for every single gig there xDDD
Awesome, well I'm looking forward to what Flasher T has to say! Maybe he'll stop by eventually =)
Haha lol I was sorta counting on the fact that a finnish band would slip in that list! xD They're my second favourite country for music right now, followed by Welsh language music and Swedish stuff so I have quite a bit on them too.
Haha, don't worry, my brain wasn't all too fresh either, yesterday evening, as you may have been able to tell! lol.
I'll introduce myself in the introduction forum shortly! =)
Out of curiosity, what are your favourite bands? =) Maybe we have some in common =D You've been so formal so far, it's hard to tell if you can connect to any of the bands I listed, or if you hate em, or have a completely different taste in music! lol.
*is off to the welcome forum*

Well, really I don't listen to much of the pop/rock Estonian music so much. When it comes to Estonian music I'm much more of an Ivo Linna or Karl Madis kind of guy.
I did go out and buy the new Laura CD though. I like the songs she sings in Estonian but not in English so much. I really prefer Estonians singing in Estonian.
Outside of that I like all kinds of music. I'm a big Morrissey fan. I like the Norwegian band Röyksopp. Current American bands like Maroon 5 and The Killers. Light jazz by Spyro Gyra. I love female French singers like Mylène Gautier. Latin singer Alejandro Sanz is good stuff. Pretty much a little of everything. _________________ Estonia Forum: www.estoniaforum.org

Hehe well so we have Karl Madis in common! =) Haha lol well I think you're really missing out by not listening to some of those other bands! xD
Yeah, I'll go a step further and say I hate it when Estonians sing in English. In my mind, Estonian is one of the prettiest languages on earth, while english ranks pretty low with me! xD I think that destroys a good song, it really does! Especially because most can't sing in english too well, and the accent gets on one's nerves!
Hmm female french singers... do you like Patricia Kaas? She's the only French pianobar / chanson singer that I like! When I'm sad I can't stop listening to "If you Go Away" =))
Funny that you should mention Alejandro Sanz... someone recommended his music to me the other day.. not much for it though =(

I myself will probably classify as 'musically challenged' - the main criteria I use for deciding about songs are their texts - but a short googling did me give a couple of links you may be interested of.
www.muusika24.ee - there you can buy music online in mp3 format. The site is in Estonian only, and you have to register there to buy something. To pay you have 2 possibilities:
1) Through your bank (I'm afraid only Estonian banks, but I didn't check this out)
2) Using your account on muusika24.ee - maybe when you write them (link Kontakt), they may show you a way to make an transfer.
www.cdmarket.eu
As the site features both Estonian and English languages, it will be for you easier to use. Use search with artist/ansamble name, and you get a list of media available for buying.

No, I don't like her deep voice. She doesn't sound pretty. _________________ Estonia Forum: www.estoniaforum.org

Hi Arvi! =)
thanks for the links, though I have my own sources for all the European music you can ever dream of! =) Thank you so much for linking me up though! I've been searching the net for that DVD Vennaskond brought out... if anyone sees it in any store, online or otherwise...it would rock if you remembered long enough to come here and tell me about it though! =))
Musically challenged..lol. Well I think there's not a single person who doesn't listen to any music at all, so own up some of your favourite bands! Yeah, lyrics are important, which bands do you think have awesome lyrics then, and why? =)
@ Alex...heh. I guess you won't like Edith Piaf then, either! xD I think that deep, smoky voice is what makes female vocals sound sexy! High pitched reminds me too much of crappy girlbands! Well, I'm a child of the 90's, so maybe I've been tainted that way! lol.

OK, but those are Estonian sites, and have more Estonian music available?

Rajacas (OK, their studium in TU just ended when I started my own there, but tapes with their songs were widely available then jet)
Kuldne Trio had some good songs earlier
Many of our country bands have something good - often based on songs of some old-time local village bard
Metsatöll - usually hevy metal is too noisy and erratic for me, but 2006 I looked their concert together with RAM on TV, and they were really good
Toten Hosen (I heared Zehn Kleiner Jägermeister for several days some years ago, what is guite an event)

Often times it does, depending on the singer and their native language. But French women with deep husky voices just don't do a thing for me. _________________ Estonia Forum: www.estoniaforum.org

Wow I just had another serious browse around the site and they do have awesome stuff, after all! It just occured to me that you had given me the link to the site with the DVD and I was too stupid to catch on. xD That so rocks! Thanks for bringing that site to my attention! *Orders stuff* =D
It's weird that I couldn't find the United Kingdom anywhere so I had to give my adress in mainland europe. Ah well!
Thanks for bringing the site to my attention again, it rocks! =))

I know all the bands you listed except for Rajacas! Worth checking out then? =) I agree, I don't like Metsatoll too much, It's not really down my line. Who are RAM? They must be pretty good if they redeemed Metsatoll! lol.
I like Die Toten Hosen though, german punk scene is pretty good if you dig that kinda sound. =) I prefer die Aertzte though! What turns me off German though is that I really don't like the language much, especially not when it's sung!
Been to any good gigs lately? I'm seriously in depriviation... last band I saw was In Extremo in winter, alone cause there was nobody else around who wanted to go at the time. Totally depressing xP
@ Alex: Hehe ok. Maybe it's the same thing that turns me off of high voices in men most of the time! That's another thing I love about Estonian and Finnish music... so many bands have awesome vocalists with deep, sexy voices! Don't get none of that here in England! Whiny Siren emo voices are in at the moment, over here! But then the Uk never had a history of deep sexy voices in their music, I guess.

Can't really be bothered reading the entire discussion and I'm not *that* much of a specialist on Estonian music either... but hey, you should check out my mates Helena Nova (www.HelenaNova.com).

It would be really extraordinary you'd known them. This was a legendary (in Estonia of-course) students band in Tartu 1967-1970. One of members was Priit Pärn, who is better known for his cartoons now.
Rajacas performed only in Tartu, mostly in students club here. Their songs were distributed as self-made tapes only, and were sung on students gatherings etc. At the end they were practically sperred from any public performong. Their best-known song is "Eestimaa" or "Tuhanded külad, tuhanded talud", but I don't belive there are some decent quality tapes available anymore.
And of-course there wern't any official recordings or vinyls or performings in TV or radio.

Riiklik Akadeemiline Meeskor - its mens choir. The song was "Raua needmine", written by Veljo Tormis for mens choirs, and rearranged by Metsatöll.
Raua needmine = Cursing/Conjuring/Spelling of Iron
The song is inspired from spells used by ancient smiths when smithing iron
